“Who’s your favorite philosopher?”

Humanity has known so much brilliance in our short time that I could never decide upon one, but here are a few among the many who have inspired and influenced my journey:

Beware lest you lose the substance by grasping at the shadow.
— Aesop (also see: Plato’s Cave)

Fairy tales are more than true; not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten.
— G.K. Chesterton

How many times have you encountered the saying, ‘When the student is ready, the Master appears?’ Do you know why that is true? The door opens inward. The Master is everywhere, but the student has to open his mind to hear the Master’s voice.
— Robert Anton Wilson

If you always put limit on everything you do, physical or anything else, it will spread into your work and into your life. There are no limits. There are only plateaus, and you must not stay there, you must go beyond them.
— Bruce Lee

Accept whatever comes to you woven in the pattern of your destiny. For what could more aptly fit your needs?
— Marcus Aurelius

You find peace not by rearranging the circumstances of your life, but by realizing who you are at the deepest level.
— Eckhart Tolle

Death is a commingling of eternity with time; in the death of a good man, eternity is seen looking through time.
— Goethe

Thank you Huey K. Bridgeforth, for the simple yet thought-provoking inquiry.

What is your favorite Star Trek moment?

All series and films are fair game.

It’s a hard call, there are so many. I tend to enjoy the existential inquiries. I’m making my rounds through ST: VOY again and one of my all time favorite episodes is coming up, Death Wish. Captain Janeway must deliberate if the Q, Quinn, has the right to end his existence. Life, death, and the choice to leave. A powerful story contrasted by humor without falling short on humanity, the poignancy is undeniable.

Q: We had no choice but to confine him but for his own safety.

QUINN: Not for my safety. For theirs. I was the greatest threat the Continuum had ever known. They feared me so much they had to lock me away for eternity. And when they did that, they were saying that the individual’s rights will be protected only so long as they don’t conflict with the state. Nothing is so dangerous to a society. My life’s work is complete. But they force immortality on me and when they do that they cheapen and denigrate my life and all life in the Continuum. All life. Captain, you’re an explorer. What if you had nothing left to explore? Would you want to live forever under those circumstances? You want me to prove to you that I suffer in terms that you equate with pain or disease. Look at us. When life has become futile, meaningless, unendurable, it must be allowed to end. Can’t you see, Captain? For us, the disease is immortality.

Nom

I know it’s a sin to eat late but I just made an outrageously delicious sammich. Sweet bell peppers and onion sautéed in orange muscat champagne vinegar with a touch of sriracha on red leaf lettuce between two slices of melted pepper jack cheese blanketed by toasted buttermilk bread. Simple but tasty! I don’t fuck around at 3 AM in the kitchen.

What are you eating?

Another Friday is Here

Is it just me or does it seem nearly impossible to find good wholesome fun with people past 10 PM on the weekend? If it were warmer I could probably come up with a few adventures but during the winter it seems everyone just holes up at home, other people’s homes, or bars.

Curious to hear from my Tumblr crew, what are some fun activities you participate in when you want to be social and don’t want to drink, or be in an alcohol-based environment?

.

.

Big hugs to those who said dancing! Definitely going to get my dancing fix on. However, gotta break the routine sometime. More spontaneous dancing while cooking at home, and something new for these later weekend hours soon… :P

And yes, weather permitting, spelunking is always fun. ;)

On the hunt

…for a new anime that not only is favored as a great series (or film) but surpasses its medium as a mind-blowing story. If it’s on par with the likes of Evangelion: Death and Rebirth, Serial Experiments Lain, Ghost in the Shell, Princess Mononoke, Mushishi, Haibane Renmei or Kino no Tabi then I’m in. I’ll even get into some adventure series along the lines of Cowboy Bebop or Fullmetal Alchemist, but nothing too riddled with pop culture triviality, as these series were appreciably not. I’m looking for real human drama and thought-provoking content.

So, what are some of your favorites?

Update: Thanks guys, lots of great mentions. Seen Blood: The Last Vampire, Hellsing, Paranoia Agent, Texhnolyze, Perfect Blue, Samurai Champloo, FLCL and more than I can remember but there are some new ones here I will have to check! If you can think of any others from the same directors, studios or with a similar vibe be sure to drop their names.
