“I think the girl who is able to earn her own living and pay her own way should be as happy as anybody on earth. The sense of independence and security is very sweet.”
Susan B. Anthony
For all the single ladies. Celebrate!
“The whole secret of existence is to have no fear. Never fear what will become of you, depend on no one. Only the moment you reject all help are you freed.”
— Buddha
“I disagree. No need to go it alone. No need to love yourself before you’ll ever be loved.
Self confidence is nice, but in the sea of diverse personalities, it is hardly a prerequisite for a successful existence, just a means of achieving it. Not saying that living in fear is okay, just that it doesn’t have to necessarily be extinguished to live with grace.
I guess my belief is a pretty unpopular one though. That’s fine. I think my belief actually goes against a pretty cliche belief, though. the cliche is a belief fueled by repetition and narrowness rather than truth.
Regardless, good night.”

I believe Buddha was expressing that it is important to cultivate a scaffolding of independence before enjoying a solid interdependence. Coming at it from the other direction may breed dependence instead. He may have also been speaking of existential realms that only we can resolve alone: loss, death, etc. We can seek counsel on these matters with others but ultimately we are our own liberty and salvation.
“Don’t ask for guarantees. And don’t look to be saved in any one thing, person, machine, or library. Do your own bit of saving, and if you drown, at least die knowing you were heading for shore.”
Ray Bradbury, Fahrenheit 451

“The essence of independence has been to think and act according to standards from within, not without.”

“Sometimes you have to stand alone—just to make sure you still can.”

“No one saves us but ourselves, no one can and no one may. We ourselves must walk the path.”
“You cannot depend upon anybody. There is no guide, no teacher, no authority. There is only you—your relationship with others and with the world—there is nothing else. When you realize this, it either brings great despair, from which comes cynicism and bitterness, or, in facing the fact that you and nobody else is responsible for the world and for yourself, for what you think, what you feel, how you act, all self-pity goes.”
“In the depth of winter, I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer.”
