Despite a few setbacks my friend and I finally made it down to Chicago and not a moment too soon, Bonobo came on shortly after we rolled into Beauty Bar. The man was on point, as always. What blew me away was the impressive array of dubstep/future garage he dropped in the latter half of his set, even working in one of my favorite The xx/Dark Sky tracks, Crystalised. I thought the narrow perimeter felt familiar, and wasn’t surprised to find out I was in what was once Sonotheque, a great space that a lot of Chicago music lovers miss. One of my fondest solo excursions was connecting with Lusine there before the venue’s end.
Didn’t quite dig the floor layout of this current incarnation, including a cut off dance floor and a DJ booth not facing, well… the dance floor. Tsk, tsk. Sound system was prop worthy though, and the price point for entry was modest. Go for the music, or if you’re in the mood for a kitschy 50’s-esque deviation from the norm. If you’re claustrophobic be wary of the potential for a packed house. Stick to the couches and you’ll be fine.
Serendipitously, dubstep muse Martyn was also in town that night at SmartBar. He played a refreshing selection, but I think I may have even liked Decimal more, who closed out the night. Noticed some XI in the mix, and was floored by remixes of the Percolator and Hardrive’s “Deep Inside”, a classic 90’s house tune sampling Barbara Tucker from the even more celebrated “Beautiful People.” Respect. Suffice it to say this was some intense melt your face bass music. Looks like I have a couple reworks to hunt for.
All in all, it was a good weekend. Exhausted but happy. It was well worth the pain. This is what life is about. Live loud. ;)

Bonobo - Walk In The Sky (Aaron Jerome Glitch Mix)
They know from the past
Life simply doesn’t last
So they live for today
For tomorrow they may
Not be able to walk in the skies
Sun slips into horizon
Moon reaches for the stars
Music is the healer
No matter who you are
No matter who you are…

Bonobo - Ghost Ship
Following a nascent glimmer.
You might think you’re inured to the power of advertising, but here’s something you couldn’t ignore even if you tried: A display window in which a virtual “street wear” model leaps, bounds, and twirls — like some sort of parkour freak — in response to your movements.
OK, that sounds weird and even a tad creepy, but just watch the video. It’ll kinda blow your mind.
How it works: An infrared camera locates a passer by, and sends a message to a computer program — developed using Processing — to respond to the person’s movements. The video’s then projected onto a screen in the shopping window.
To give the brand deeper play, Wallander set it up so that the look of the virtual models (and the trippy wallpaper behind ‘em) is determined by web users all over the world.

Added bonus: Bonobo’s “Kiara” is sampled in the vid.

Keep your ears on Floating Points, he’s been working some phenomenal magic. Precisely the kind of track that makes me content to turn off the phone and tune out the world.

THE moment of the night. With a little bit of luck and the right view from VIP I fulfilled my mission of getting at least one decent pic of Bonobo! :)
What a great show. Still glowing.

Gettin’ ready to see the man spin tonight! Bonobo has been a serious muse for me over the past several years. It will be a major honor to shake his hand.
Bonus: My friend Nick Nice is opening for him! It’s truly heartwarming to see connections like this appear. It’s a small world after all. :)
Hang on tight while we grab the next page
